Andrew Uren: bass clarinet
Andrew
Uren is a clarinettist and a bass clarinet specialist. He studied at Auckland
University under the direction of Peter Scholes where he completed his Bachelor
of Music Performance with Honours and his post-graduate Uitvoerend Musicus (U.M.)
at Sweelinck Conservatorium, Amsterdam, with bass clarinettist, Harry Sparnaay.
Andrew
holds a post graduate Diploma of Education, and presently tutors at the University
Of Auckland - School Of Music, and seven Auckland schools. He has been teaching
clarinet since 1989, and directing clarinet choirs, wind ensembles, and concert
bands, and has worked on a one-off basis with classes under the 2003 APOPS system.
Andrew conducted rehearsals of the Auckland Wind Orchestra (previously Auckland
Youth Symphonic Band). Through the 175 East/KBB Music Composition Competition,
and through the Eastern Institute of Technology (Hawke's Bay), as well as other
organisations, he has taken workshops and masterclasses at all levels for solo
and ensemble playing and composition.
Andrew freelances with the Auckland
Philharmonia, New Zealand Symphony, Auckland Chamber, Christchurch Symphony, and
Southern Sinfonia orchestras. He is a founding member of the contemporary ensemble
175 East which was awarded the 2003 Citation for Services to New Zealand Music.
Andrew also works with Australia's premiere contemporary ensemble, Elision.
Andrew
and his wife, Katherine Hebley, form the KAHU Ensemble which has given recitals
throughout New Zealand, in England and in Fiji, and in late 2003 recorded and
performed Anthony Ritchie's Double Concerto for Cello and Bass Clarinet with the
Auckland Chamber Orchestra. | |
